Winter gear guide: does your dog actually need a coat?
Loyal Teal · September 13, 2026 · 1 min read
Not every dog needs a winter coat — but more dogs need one than you might think. Here's how to tell.
Dogs that need winter gear
- Short or single-coated breeds — greyhounds, boxers, chihuahuas, vizslas. No undercoat means no insulation.
- Small dogs — less body mass, more surface area. They lose heat fast.
- Seniors and puppies — temperature regulation is weaker at both ends of life.
- Lean or low-body-fat dogs — insulation is literally insulation.
Signs your dog is cold
- Shivering or trembling
- Tucked tail and hunched posture
- Lifting paws off the ground repeatedly
- Reluctance to keep walking / pulling toward home
What to look for in a coat
- Coverage — chest and belly coverage matters more than the back
- Water resistance — wet fur loses heat 20x faster than dry fur
- Easy on/off — a coat you fight to put on is a coat you stop using
- Harness access — a leash portal or a cut that works with your harness
Layer a fleece under a waterproof shell on the coldest days — same principle as your own winter system.
